Frequently asked questions about word unscrambling

How do I unscramble words?

Enter your scrambled letters into the input box above and click Unscramble. Our tool searches a dictionary of thousands of valid English words and returns every word that can be made from your letters. Results are sorted by length and color-coded so you can instantly spot 2-letter words through 7+ letter words. Use the filter dropdowns to narrow by word length, starting letter, ending letter, or letters the word must contain.

What is the best word unscrambler for Scrabble?

Our unscrambler finds every valid word from your Scrabble tiles including rare 2-letter and 3-letter words that score disproportionately well. Switch sorting to Scrabble points to instantly see your highest-scoring options. All words in our dictionary are valid in standard Scrabble dictionaries. For serious Scrabble improvement, pairing this tool with a dedicated study app like Scrabble GO or Collins Scrabble trainer helps you memorise the high-value 2-letter and 3-letter words.

Can I use a word unscrambler for Wordle?

Yes — set the Word length filter to 5 letters. If you know a correct letter position from Wordle's green tiles, use the Starts with filter. If you know letters that are in the word but not their position (yellow tiles), use Contains. This narrows down the possible answers significantly. Our unscrambler is one of the fastest free Wordle helpers available because it runs entirely in your browser — no server round-trips.

How do you unscramble letters into words?

When unscrambling manually, look for these patterns first: common suffixes like -ING, -ED, -LY, -TION, -NESS, -MENT; common prefixes like UN-, RE-, PRE-, IN-, OUT-; and vowel clusters like OUR, AIR, EAR, OON. Every English word needs at least one vowel, so group your vowels first, then try fitting consonants around them. Or just use our unscrambler — it does this analysis instantly across the entire dictionary.

Is using a word unscrambler cheating?

In formal Scrabble tournaments, any external aid violates the rules. In casual play with friends, most people consider it acceptable if everyone agrees. Many players use word unscramblers as learning tools — seeing which words your letters can make teaches you new vocabulary you'll remember in future games. Teachers, crossword constructors, puzzle designers, and writers also use word unscramblers professionally as part of their workflow.

Does the word unscrambler work for Words With Friends?

Yes. Words With Friends uses a dictionary similar to but not identical to Scrabble's TWL. Most words found by our unscrambler are valid in both games. Words With Friends accepts some words not valid in Scrabble (and vice versa). When in doubt, just try the word in the game — invalid words are rejected automatically without penalty.

What words can I make with 7 letters?

Seven-letter words in Scrabble earn a 50-point bonus (called a bingo) for using all your tiles in one turn. Common 7-letter words include: ETAERIO, TRAINED, AILERON, ORDINAL, PAINTER, RETAINS, and NASTIER. Our unscrambler finds all valid 7-letter combinations from your specific tiles — filter by "7+ letters" and sort by Scrabble points to find your highest-value play.
